In order to work towards our pupil participation and global perspectives topics in Eco-Schools we are now working with VCB's European Studies Group and Voluntary Services.
The European Studies Programme is a post-primary curriculum based programme linking schools in Ireland with schools across Europe through sustained collaborative projects furthering tolerance, mutual understanding and appreciation of the cultures of others.
The European Studies Programme provides opportunities for students to develop and grow as young European citizens living in an increasingly globalised society.
The programme links post-primary schools across Europe through sustained collaborative curriculum based projects furthering tolerance, mutual understanding and an appreciation of the cultures of others.
It is jointly funded by the Departments of Education in Northern Ireland and Ireland.
Currently more than 300 schools in 25 European Countries are engaged in the programme.
There are two programmes, the Junior Programme for 11-15 year olds and the Senior Programme which is for students aged 16+. The programme is open to all schools and all ability ranges.
Upon joining a programme a school is assigned to a cluster/working group which contains a Northern Ireland school, a school from Ireland and 4 to 5 other schools from different European countries. The school nominates a teacher/coordinator who attends an annual residential International Planning Conference. At conference the cluster group completes an agreement/contract of curriculum-based work which their respective pupils will collaborate on during the following academic year. The emphasis is adaptability to allow for each school’s situation and needs.
A list of current school agreements and samples of students work is on the information section of the European Studies website (www.european-studies.org).
